Tooth loss is a common condition that is experienced by numerous people due to various issues. The most common causes are extensive tooth decay, gum disease, and injury. Although dental services have been evolving over the years, the cases of tooth loss are still prevalent.

Fortunately, there are now various means for people to have their lost teeth restored. The options available not only improves their appearance but also allows them to use the teeth as normal as possible. Replacing lost structures is also ideal to prevent the possible effects like bone loss, gum recession, misalignments, and more lost teeth.

At Hudson Oaks Family Dentistry, we offer a solution in the form of dental bridges to literally bridge the gaps caused by tooth loss. We do so to help patients regain their confidence and also for them to perform habits like eating, talking, and smiling normally again.

WHAT IS A DENTAL BRIDGE?

It is a type of prosthesis that is comprised of dental crowns and pontics (fake teeth). The crowns are positioned at both ends to act as anchors while the pontics would serve to fill in the spaces. Dental bridges can be compared to partial dentures since they can restore one or more missing teeth, but unlike the latter, bridges are attached on the adjacent teeth which makes them immovable.

THE PROCESS OF PLACING A DENTAL BRIDGE

To complete the process, at least two dental visits are required

First Appointment

The teeth that are at either side of the gaps would be prepared by shaving to make way for the placement of the prosthesis. Some portions of the enamel will be shaped for it to become a good anchor for the bridge. After the preparation, impressions will be carefully taken by the dentist to get proper molds that would be used for the custom creation of the prosthesis. The impression will then be sent to an off-site lab who will create the permanent bridge. For the meantime, a temporary prosthesis will be attached to the teeth to protect its exposed portions.

Second Appointment

It is usually scheduled if the prosthesis is ready. The temporary placement will then be removed to check the fitting of the dental bridge. The dentist will examine its fit and perform adjustments when necessary. If the expected results are met, the appliance would then be cemented properly in place.

Bridges are not for everyone, but to check if you are a good candidate for this restoration, make sure to schedule an initial consultation to get the opinion of a dental professional.
