No More Dental Anxiety
Do you get anxious at the thought of sitting in a dental chair? You are certainly not alone. It is estimated that up to 15% of Americans experience some level of dental anxiety or dental fear, and unfortunately, many of these avoid going to the dentist because of it. Dental anxiety can present itself on many levels. You may only experience sweaty palms or a racing heart while sitting in the waiting room, or you may suffer from a paralyzing fear that causes you to cancel your dental appointments all together. Fortunately, sedation dentistryis a game changer for those who are not getting the dental care they need and deserve due to anxiety or fear.
Sedation dentistry comes in many forms, but they all work to help patients in a more relaxed and peaceful state during dental procedures. At Hudson Oaks Family Dentistry, we offer both nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation.
Nitrous Oxide is one of the most common forms of sedation dentistry. It can be safely used by both adults and kids. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, sweet-smelling gas that is gently inhaled though a nosepiece during your time in the dental chair. Patients prefer this method because it keeps them relaxed, yet completely aware of their surroundings and able to communicate with the dentist. Furthermore, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off within a few minutes after the mask is removed, which means patients can safely drive home and carry out their normal activities for the rest of the day.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that sedation dentistry is reserved only for lengthy or complex dental procedures. Many patients choose sedation dentistry for their routine dental cleanings or minor treatments. At Hudson Oaks Family Dentistry, we are proud to provide laughing gas or oral sedation if it means you will follow through with the preventative and restorative procedures your smile needs.
When dealing with your dental anxiety, keep in mind that the way you talk about and approach dental care is often passed down to your children. In fact, a study published in the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry found that the greater the dental fear or anxiety of one family member, the higher the level in the rest of the family. If sedation dentistry is what you need to keep your dental appointments on the calendar and approach them with a positive attitude, then please don’t be afraid to take advantage of it. Gone are the days that you have to worry about feeling anxious when you show your pearly whites to the dentist.
